Visibility Strategy Sessions

BACKGROUND

Visibility is one of four Strategy Session topics that will help distill existing policy, ongoing engagement, and high level discussion into a set of policy proposals. Those policies will then be bolstered by action steps devised by the KC Spirit Playbook planning staff and refined through public input and discussion.

If you aren't able to attend a Strategy Session, you can always still participate by completing the surveys at the bottom of this page.

Visibility can best be described as the elements of our city that exist in plain sight and contribute to the desirability of our community. These are the environments we collectively own and program, places that provide opportunities for recreation, our cultural assets, and the physical character of development.

Topics to be covered at Visibility Strategy Sessions include:

  • Urban Design
  • The Public Realm
  • Parks & Open Space
  • Historic Preservation
  • Arts & Cultural Assets



FIRST VISIBILITY STRATEGY SESSION - COMPLETED

On June 29, 2021, the City Planning & Development staff held the first Visibility Strategy Session to identify priorities and policies that will be in the final KC Spirit Playbook. Staff analyzed the public feedback provided over the last year to identify discussion topics related to urban design and the public realm. Using a series of polls, attendees reacted to a series of statements and provided additional discussion about their long-range priorities.

SECOND VISIBILITY PUBLIC MEETING - COMPLETED

On August 5, 2021, the City Planning & Development staff held the second Visibility Strategy Session to identify priorities and policies that will be in the final KC Spirit Playbook. Staff analyzed the public feedback provided over the last year to identify discussion topics related to parks & open space, historic preservation, and arts & culture. Using a series of polls, attendees reacted to a series of statements and provided additional discussion about their long-range priorities.

THIRD VISIBILITY PUBLIC MEETING - COMPLETED

On November 17, 2021, the City Planning & Development staff held the third Visibility Strategy Session to present draft versions of recommendations related to Historic Preservation that may be in the final KC Spirit Playbook. Staff has created these recommendations based on the public engagement conducted since May 2020, both in-person and online, as well as input from subject matter experts and local stakeholders. The Historic Preservation recommendations that are new or updated are available for public review and comment at the links below; they are sorted by the 5 Historic Preservation goals.

Goal #5 - Draft Recommendations Survey

Any recommendations that are remaining the same from our current comprehensive plan (FOCUS) are not included in the surveys. For a list of Historic Preservation recommendations that are being carried over from our current comprehensive plan, please click this link.     Use the forum provided to let staff know what you think the big priorities are for the next 20 years and to discuss all things Visibility. 

    Specifically, we want to know Kansas City can best enhance our existing facilities, as well as ensure future development is of the highest quality while;

    • improving our public realm and streetscapes
    • advancing high-quality design
    • strengthening our world-class parks and open space
    • preservation of our most important historical resources
    • enhancing our cultural assets.
    • creating more participation in the planning process
    • reaching any groups you think we should be collaborating with
